Had a few hours to spare but the weather wasn't great so I went to the Robe River at Crossboyne near Claremorris which was in an article in last months Trout & Salmon magazine. In just a couple of hours at least 25 fish took my dry fly and I missed nearly all of them - I think I must be a bit rusty. They were only very small fish but it was highly enjoyable. My fears that the fishing would be ruined by the very high water were unfounded. Time for the Clare River next I think. Continue

I fished a competition from Ballindiff Bay last Monday. There were 32 anglers but only 7 fish caught. Plentiful duck fly hatches and even the first few olives. I saw a number of rising fish but never discovered what they were taking. Emerging duck fly I would guess but they laughed at my imitation. I've still not caught a trout this season yet!!! Continue

Out on the Corrib today, 4 of us in 2 boats fishing round Galcarrig Island and Lime island. Saw virtually no duckfly and one of us had heard tell that the duckfly had more or less finished despite none of us seeing more than a few from time to time. Also, there were quite a lot of olives hatching today and lots of gulls were hoovering them up - but virtually no sign of fish taking them. Does anyone know whats going on? Or were we just unlucky? Had a cracking start to the year trolling on the Corrib but not tried the rivers yet. Does anyone have any ideas of where I can fish on the Black River in Shrule. Do I have access to the river by the road bridge. I'm only used to river fishing in the UK where all river access is private land or controlled by the clubs so I can't gey my head round just helping myself to river fishing. Also where might be a good place on the Clare River to fish the fly preferably as near to Shrule as practical.… Continue
