Western Fly Fishing

Information on fly fishing in the west of Ireland

I fished from below howley's down to ryan's this evening. Despite the favourable height (.6) and clear water I saw no fish until I hit one at the top of Ryans. I was fishing a size 12 shrimp on the point and a bloody butcher on the dropper. I was suprised to see that the fish had taken the butcher rather than the shrimp fly and I managed to land a red fish of about 6lb which I released. I didn't see or hear of any other fish nor did I get any sea trout. The water is perfect for fly now.

Congratulations Conor. Its good to hear someone's catching salmon. I've had a poor season on the Corrib - only one trout in about 15 outings. I've at last got myself a boat now so hopefully next season will be better. If you know of anyone sellinbg a 6hp outboard please let me know as I'm having trouble finding one. I'd like a bigger engine but it has to be taken off the boat to avoid it being stolen and anything more powerful is too heavy. I went down to Salthill prom last evening and caught asn awful lot of mackerel - great fun.
