Western Fly Fishing

Information on fly fishing in the west of Ireland

A long last the lake has begun to fish,.. out yesterday Wed for a few hours with fairly good conditions for most of the day left the lake at 6pm had a couple of fish lost a couple more, better fishing than of late fish moving to olives and hatching buzzer fished wets most of the day and got a few fish as said..tried dries but not for long enough probaly the rain showers brougt on hatches and the fish were on top looking..
Today Thursday had to suffer with a flat calm in the morning....a good few fish moving to emerging Buzzer and Olives saw a lot nymphing..tried epoxys..no touch..wind picked up to a ripple had 2 fish 13inch mark on dryflys rose a few more off lake at 4pm which was a pity as I'd say there was 1 more in it for me if I could stay..a few Mayfly spotted also..

Yeah..same story myself today, completely different lake, it was a horrible day to fish, very bright with a blustery north westerly, fished again in Ballycurran, and around the back of Inchquin..at 11am there was a small rise of fish and the gulls were very active on olives...mate of mine rose 1 fish on the wets at about midday..after that nothing, very poor, but conditions were awful....came off lake at about 5pm and went up to Mask and dropped the boat at Cushlough, there was a competition from there today ( second half tomorrow) a lot of anglers but relatively few fish caught by contrast to the amount fishing..one lucky angler had 4 beauts for around 9lb and hence is well in the lead..seemingly caught down the Maumtrasna end....Out on Mask meself tomorrow for me sins, give it a lash anyway....

I've just come back from Ballindiff - nothing! Not just me though, all the locals suffered blanks and very few even saw any flies let alone fish. As you say it was very bright and that wind had a cool edge to it. I'm getting really good at the excuses.

Paul, Went out from Greenfields and fished around there, There was fish moving in Greenfields Bay and aroun Camalaun and the top of Ballycurran...Other lads got fishing around Lime Island and in general there was a movement of fish around the lake I think as all I spoke to said they met fish. For some it was there first fish this year off it.... heading out today for a while weather very bright though at the moment...

Whereabouts were you fishing Phil? Friends of mine were out from Ballindiff last evening and did OK after weeks of no action. Sounds like the lake is coming right at least for a while
